Tar River Chapter

The Tar River Chapter of Les Gemmes, Incorporated received its charter on November 14, 2006.  The Chartering took place in the Erastus Lucas Hall at the Ebenezer Baptist Church with the ceremony conducted by Mrs. Shirline Johnson, National President and Dr. DeLores Wilson, National Membership Chairperson. The chapter was sponsored by the Oxford chapter with several members in attendance. 

Our charter members were as follows:Crystal Belfield, Ernestine Belfield, Minnie Campbell, Helen Foust, Doris Harrison Cooper, Dr. Bertha Haynes, Charlotte Holloway, Nellie Hunter, Stephanie Hunter, Davida Jones, Paula Jones, Dr. Nancy G. Joyner, DeLoris Knight and Eva Satterwhite.

Our chapter is dedicated to the principles of Les Gemmes, Inc. whose purpose is to provide educational, cultural, civic and social activities for families and the community. We encourage and promote the current Dream Initiative:

Domestic Violence, Support for Seniors, Veterans, Youth, Literacy and Economic Assistance.

Chapter President’s Message

Greetings from the Tenacious Tar River of Les Gemmes, Inc. We are located in Rocky Mount,NC. We have a membership of 44 sisters and we meet the 4th Thursday of the month at 6:00pm. Our services areas of Nash, Edgecombe, and Cumberland counties. We provide services and programming in the areas of Literary Arts, Support for Seniors, Domestic Violence. Economic Assistance, Mentoring and Tutoring, and Health Living.

October 2025 – Domestic Violence/Breast Cancer–posted events and wore purple and pink to support awareness; 

Every  November–Tar River prepares a soup and sandwich lunch for the residents of the local homeless shelter

American Education Week-several members read to local classroom students 

December – We support the Salvation Army Angel Tree, adopting families;

Socks for the Elderly, for a local nursing home

Support local school classrooms with personal supplies; hats & gloves

Harambee Square resident gifts

January 2026 – MLK Day of Service

February 1, 2026 – African American Read-in at Morning Star Church, Battleboro, NC

Donating to Zion's Toys

It’s the Most Wonderful Time to GIVE!!
We kicked off the season by donating a gift of $500 to Zion’s Toys—a community based organization sponsored by the Greater Love Christian Church!

MLK Day of Service

We honored Dr. King by attending the MLK Community Breakfast then preparing and serving lunch to the residents of United Community Ministries! The residents really appreciated our efforts!
