Norfolk Chapter

Upward, Onward, United We Stand

Norfolk Chapter Brief History

Our roots trace back to the national organization’s founding in September 1955 by four visionary educators — Melvine C. Blakeley, Lena L. Siler, Queenie L. Branch, and Inez Mercer Brown.

Founding & Foundation

The charter members of the Norfolk Chapter — Doretha Alston, Ceceilia Brothers, Vivian Brown, Vivian Clements, Emma Copeland, Anna Dodson, Naomi Green, Rachel Harris, Vernell Harris, Mildred Wilkerson Lambert, Vernetta Lee, Helen Roberson, Alice Scott, Edith Stanley, Juanita Whitehurst, and Effie Wilson — established a pillar of service, sisterhood, and scholarship in the local community. Their vision laid the groundwork for decades of meaningful outreach and leadership that still guide us today.

2024–2026 Administration

Under the current 2024–2026 leadership, the Norfolk Chapter continues to honor that legacy with a dedicated team of officers:

  • President: Christi Johnson
  • Vice President: Louise Epps
  • Secretary: Tonya Edmonds
  • Assistant Secretary: Dionne Washington
  • Treasurer: Verline Johnson
  • Financial Secretary: Hownetta Haynes
  • Chapter Representative: Rana Parham
  • Parlimentarian: Vickie Nellum

Programs and Initiatives

During this biennium, the Norfolk Chapter is actively engaged in programs that reflect the national “Dream Initiative,” including:

  • Youth Mentoring & Tutoring: Academic support and college-prep workshops in local schools.
  • Health & Wellness Outreach: Community health fairs, wellness workshops, and educational events.
  • Senior Support: Regular visits, companionship, and resource-sharing for older adults in our community.
  • Cultural & Literary Enrichment: A “Books & Conversation” series, plus arts and heritage events.
  • Civic Engagement: Voter registration drives, civic forums, and community education.
  • Community Service: Partnerships with food banks, shelters, and social‑service organizations to provide direct service.

We remain committed to upholding Les Gemmes’ mission — empowering our communities through service, education, and sisterhood. As we move forward, we invite everyone to join hands in service, uplift one another, and continue the work our founders began.
