Upward, Onward, United We Stand

Brieft History

In 1976, Evelyn West from Portsmouth Chapter of Les Gemmes, Incorporated, met with a group of young ladies called “The Charmettes” and extended an invitation for membership in the Les Gemmes, Incorporated. “The Charmettes” accepted the invitation and were inducted into the organization, Spring 1977. Portsmouth Chapter sponsored Suffolk Chapter and became our “Mother Chapter”. We give honor to Evelyn West for encouraging us to become the Jewels that shine deep down in our hearts.

In 1982 and 2018, we hosted the National Conclaves which were held in Virginia Beach and Suffolk, VA. In addition, we have hosted the National Board meeting and Founder’s Day activities.We are blessed to still be moving onward with the vision of the Founders to where we are today.

Calendar of Events

  • OCTOBER“Sweet Tooth Week: Donut Sales
  • NOVEMBER chapter will donate food baskets and turkeys to needy families. 
  • “Chat & Chew”: members will get together for Food, Fellowship, Friendship, and Fun at a local restaurant in Suffolk. ( supporting our city establishments)
  • “Paint & Sip”( supporting a Fine Art teacher with Suffolk Public Schools System), pending( outreach for mental health)
  • Intake 4 new members in the Suffolk Chapter, Les Gemmes, Inc.(Nov. 24, 2024)
  • December Cheer Fund donation, Other charitable organizations, Salvation Army Christmas stockings.(pending)
  • Sneakers Drive(monthly pick-up and mail-out)
  • January Attend a MLK, Jr. Program as a group.
  • February Fundraiser for back-to-school supplies for Booker T. Washington Elementary( our adopted school)
  • March “Sneaker Ball”(fundraiser)
  • May/June Summer Day Basket Raffle and Fashion Show.
  • June Fundraiser for our scholarship recipients.(Raffle) 
  • Close out the meeting with a summer cookout. Family and friends are invited. Donation
